Tarragona was the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Citerior under the name Tarraco, and its extensive Roman remains — amphitheatre, circus, forum, city walls, aqueduct and necropolis — are collectively listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The amphitheatre sits directly on the seafront overlooking the Mediterranean, with Platja del Miracle beach immediately below.
The old town (Part Alta) occupies a raised plateau above the circus with a Gothic cathedral at its centre. Tarragona is also a practical base for visiting PortAventura World (20 km north) and the Priorat wine region (50 km inland).
